Biography

Dr. Al-Aly is the Director of the Clinical Epidemiology Center, and Chief of the Research and Education Service at the VA Saint Louis Health Care System. He earned his Medical Degree from the American University of Beirut, and completed his residency and fellowship at Saint Louis University. Dr. Al-Aly was then a visiting fellow at Washington University in Saint Louis before joining the VA Saint Louis Health Care System. Dr. Al-Aly established and directs the VA Saint Louis Health Care System’s Clinical Epidemiology Center. The Center has established expertise and strong track record of using big data to generate new knowledge. Work from the Center is widely cited and has been featured in multiple mainstream media outlets. Evidence generated by the

Center motivated discussion around major policy initiatives and shaped changes in clinical practice guidelines.

Dr. Al-Aly has numerous highly cited publications in NEJM, JAMA, JAMA Network Open, BMJ, BMJ Open, The Lancet, The Lancet Planetary Health, the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology, Kidney International, American Journal of Kidney Diseases, and others. He serves on numerous editorial boards including the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology, the Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology, Transplant international, and others. He also serves on study sections at NIH, VA, and other national and international funding agencies.

Dr. Al-Aly contributes to the American Society of Nephrology in various capacities where he now serves as the Chair of the Publications Committee which oversees all the publications of the Society.
